French researchers have discovered that using bacteria into which a human protein has been inserted fights intestinal inflammation in mice. This finding could eventually help fight Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, the two main types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), in humans.
The human protein that fights inflammation is Elafin. The bacteria used are Lactococcus lacti and Lactobacillus casei, according to Medical News Today.
